Agronomic performance and genetic dissimilarity of second-harvest soybean cultivars using REML/BLUP and Gower’s algorithm Bragantia
Follmann,Diego Nicolau; Souza,Velci Queiróz de; Cargnelutti Filho,Alberto; Demari,Gustavo Henrique; Nardino,Maicon; Olivoto,Tiago; Carvalho,Ivan Ricardo; Silva,Antonio David Bortoluzzi; Meira,Daniela; Meier,Carine.
ABSTRACT The cultivation of second-harvest with soybean crop after first-harvest with maize crop has become an alternative to aggregate income to farmers in the South region of Brazil. However, there is little information about this cropping system in this region. The aims of this study were to: (i) evaluate the agronomic performance of soybean (Glycine max L.) cultivars growing in second-harvest during the summer; and (ii) evaluate the genetic divergence of the cultivars based on qualitative and quantitative traits. To do this, 18 soybean cultivars were evaluated in three field trials, sown during January in the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul state, Brazil. In each experiment, a randomized block design with four replicates was used. Five...

Application of RAPD-PCR for Determining the Clonality of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Different Hospitals BABT
Idil,Neslihan; Bilkay,Isil Seyis.
Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR was applied with ten random 10-mer primers to examine the molecular diversity among methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains in the hospitals and to investigate the epidemiological spread of these strains between different hospitals. The main objective of the study was to identify appropriate primers, which successfully established the clonality of MRSA. Three of the primers yielded particularly discriminatory patterns and they were used to perform the RAPD analysis which revealed different bands ranging from 200 to 1500 bp. Dendogram was created by the un-weighted pair group method using arithmetic (UPGMA) average clustering and it was constructed based on the combination results of the new...

Assessing Genetic Variation and Spread of Phalaris minor Resistant to ACCase Inhibiting Herbicides in Iran Planta Daninha
GHEREKHLOO,J.; ALCÁNTARA-DE LA CRUZ,R.; OSUNA,M.D.; SOHRABI,S.; PRADO,R..
ABSTRACT: Littleseed canarygrass (Phalaris minor) is the second most serious and problematic grass weed in wheat fields in Iran, and has developed resistance to ACCase inhibiting herbicides. Inter-simple sequence repeat (ISSR) analysis was used to assess genetic variation between and within ACCase inhibitor-resistant and susceptible P. minor populations in Iran and to determine the origin of resistance and its dispersal. Sixteen P. minor populations from different regions in Iran were analysed using seven primers. Genetic relationships generated using UPGMA analysis indicated the presence of more than one genotype among the herbicide resistant populations. The results indicated that the high genetic similarity and physical proximity among the resistant P....

EST-SSR markers were used to investigate the genetic diversity among and within coffee populations, to explore the possibility of their use for fingerprinting of cultivars and to assist breeding programs. Seventeen markers, developed from ESTs (Expressed Sequence Tags) from the Brazilian Coffee Genome Project, were used. All markers showed polymorphism among the genotypes assessed. The average number of allele per primer was 5.1. The highest polymorphisms were found within C. canephora (88.2%) and rust-resistant varieties (35.3%). About 29.4% of the markers differentiated C. arabica from Híbrido de Timor; it was also possible to identify those closest and farthest from C. arabica . The analysis of population-grouped genotypes revealed a 64.0% genetic...

Genetic dissimilarity and definition of recombination clusters among green corn half-sib progenies Bragantia
Silva,Danilo Fernando Guimarães; Coelho,Caroline de Jesus; Romanek,Cristiane; Gardingo,José Raulindo; Silva,Anderson Rodrigo da; Graczyki,Brenda Luiza; Oliveira,Eduardo Augusto Teixeira; Matiello,Rodrigo Rodrigues.
ABSTRACT The present study aimed to estimate the genetic divergence among corn half-sib progenies seeking to direct recombination between contrasting and superior progenies for green corn production. Ninety-six progenies were evaluated in a randomized block design with 3 replications, and 18 characteristics associated with agronomic adaptation and green corn yield were measured. The genetic divergence was estimated using generalized square Mahalanobis distance and the progenies grouped by UPGMA and Tocher’s methods. The joint analysis of variance showed genetic variability among the progenies for the characteristics evaluated. The UPGMA method was more sensitive than Tocher’s, since it led to the formation of 11 groups genetically dissimilar compared to...

Genetic divergence in Tetragonisca angustula Latreille, 1811 (Hymenoptera, Meliponinae, Trigonini) based on rapd markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Oliveira,Rosana de Cássia; Nunes,Francis de Morais Franco; Campos,Ana Paula Soraggi; Vasconcelos,Soraya Matos de; Roubik,David; Goulart,Luiz Ricardo; Kerr,Warwick Estevam.
One of the commonest neotropical stingless bees is Tetragonisca angustula (Latreille, 1811), popularly known in Portuguese as jataí, which occurs in variable nesting sites from Mexico to Argentina. We used 18 primers to generate 218 RAPD markers which we used to determined the genetic distance between T. angustula populations from 25 localities in three different Latin America countries, using Tetragonisca weyrauchi from the Brazilian state of Acre and the common honey bee (Apis mellifera) as outgroups. Genetic distance, calculated as the Percentage of Dissimilarity (14%), based on all markers divided the T. angustula population into eastern (group 1) and western (group 2) groups. However, we were able to separate the two groups by using only two primers...

Genetic diversity of Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) Populations in Brazil revealed by RAPD markers Genet. Mol. Biol.
Lima,L.H.C.; Campos,L.; Moretzsohn,M.C.; Návia,D.; Oliveira,M.R.V. de.
Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) was considered a secondary pest in Brazil until 1990, despite being an efficient geminivirus vector in beans and soybean. In 1991, a new biotype, known as B. tabaci B biotype (=B. argentifolii) was detected attacking weed plants and causing phytotoxic problems in Cucurbitaceae. Nowadays, B. tabaci is considered one of the most damaging whitefly pests in agricultural systems worldwide that transmits more than 60 different plant viruses. Little is known about the genetic variability of these populations in Brazil. Knowledge of the genetic variation within whitefly populations is necessary for their efficient control and management. The objectives of the present study were to use RAPD markers (1) to estimate the genetic diversity of B....
